Ipswich Means Business, local business networking for local businesses
Ipswich Means Business is the name we give to our networking events. We've been running business networking events for 5 years, bringing together local business managers and owners, helping them to form relationships and make new connections, which could help them grow their own business.
From the start, we knew that we wanted to deliver events that were different to others out there. After all, what is the point in duplication? We talked to local business owners, and the feedback was that evening events would be popular, and those with a relaxed, informal style, with an 'after work' feel that is more common in larger companies in big cities. For smaller businesses, this means that their day work is not affected, and that they can more relaxed than when attending a breakfast networking event, knowing they have to be at a job/meeting immediately after.
Some people come to business networking events with the expectation that they will leave with at least one lead, and the promise of a sale. The reality is that this is not often the case; business networking is an opportunity to raise awareness of your business to a wider audience, and in such a way that even if those you talk to are not directly in need of your services, will keep you in mind when talking to others who may be. When attending a networking event it is also important to show an interest in others, and what they do. You may need to call upon them, or be able to recommend them one day.
An example of successful networking is when I meet someone at an event, who pitches their business well, a person who is well presented, knowledgeable about their product/service, approachable and friendly. I may not need their services, but perhaps at a later date, at a completely unrelated event, such as an evening out with friends, someone mentions that they could really need some help with a business service, and ask if I know anyone who I could recommend. Although I am not able to recommend the business if I have not used the product/service, what I can recommend is the person who represents the business. The person who comes to a networking event expecting to come away with a sales approach and expecting to go home with a list of leads is least likely to be recommended, it is always those who have taken time to build a relationship with others on the evening, someone who shows an interest in others, rather than being there to 'sell' who gets my recommendation.
And because the style of our events are informal and relaxed, there are no formal presentations, but there is plenty of time to talk. The format of the events means that you will get to meet everyone, and no-one gets to dominate or take over.
